Ongoing Projects
Dec 1994 - 1997 (and beyond) - CU serves on the Public Service Electric and Gas Management Plan Advisory Committee. This assignment was by direction of NJDEP Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife. PSE&G's estuary enhancement program is the worlds largest marsh restoration site. A number of our members and supporters serve on municipal advisory groups to this same project.
Ongoing- In 91-2 Botanist Rick Radis is contracted by Citizens United to survey flora on segment of Maurice River. Botanist Gerry Moore is contacted to contract for 93-94 survey. The goal is to survey the entire watershed in order to enhance conservation efforts by other agencies.
Ongoing- Arranging for the preservation of various land parcels with landowners and the Nature Conservancy and Natural Lands Trust.
Ongoing - Starting in 1987 CU funded transmitters for tracking the bald eagle, logging and reporting eagle sitings to the State Endangered Non-Game Species Department.
Ongoing- Beginning in 1987 to the present, Herpetological Associates is contracted for the seventh year to conduct Waterfowl and Raptor survey / studies of the Maurice River.
Ongoing- Erecting osprey platforms, in a successful effort to recolonize the Maurice River osprey population. 52 chicks produced in 1999.
Ongoing- CU has acquired a library of cultural and natural materials on the River- wildlife surveys, videos, old photographs, books, postcards.
Ongoing- Testifying at various municipal hearings as to the ecological importance of the watershed and maintenance of conservation areas.
Ongoing- Members do water quality tests for River Keeper Network. We also fund chemical analysis of water and sediment samples.
Ongoing- CU has continually hosted and toured individuals, groups, elected and appointed officials to a day on the river. Most notably Bayday (since 93) and the Annual Conference of Mayors Seafood Festival (since 92).
Ongoing- We have vigorously supported various environmental legislation.
Ongoing- Maurice River Watershed Awareness Program - thousands of local school children and numerous civic organizations have viewed CU slide shows and presentations on the watershed.
Ongoing- CU serves on the Shorebird Advisory Group to NJ DEP Endangered and Nongame Species Program
Ongoing- CU hosts informative guest lectures at many of its regular meetings. Press releases are distributed and all meetings are open to the public.
Ongoing- Each year, since 1993, we have participated in Bayday, an event coordinated by the Bayshore Discovery Project. Member artists supply enthusiasm and teaching talent to youngsters in ?CU Paint a Landscape?, an art activity designed to help the youth appreciate the beauty of the river and marsh area. We also rent a large boat to ferry people from shore to shore, and a cultural and natural history tour is provided on this vessel.
Ongoing - Since 1994 we have participated in the Stockton Alliance, a unique group of NJ corporate and environmental CEOs who seek common ground on sustainable resource issues.
