1998 - 2000 List of Accomplishments

00- Awarded grant by Cumberland County from the National Park Service to produce NJN Program featuring local artists’ depictions of Bayshore habitat in an effort to increase public appreciatio n of wetland and accompanying upland buffers.

00- Coordinated workshops for the Down Jersey Celebrating Our Sense of Place for teachers and administrators in Cumberland, Cape May and Salem Counties. At this point over 110+ volunteers have participated in completing the teachers’ packets. At this point (2/00) with only 60 teacher packets distributed recipients estimated the potential number of teachers they will introduce to the packet to be 2,131 and the number of students to be an astounding 22,581. The teachers’ initial reactions have been glowing with superlatives, “wonderful”, “great”, “excellent resource” and the like.

99- Megan Piontkowski of Cumberland Regional High School receives 2nd Annual Connie Jost Memorial Art Scholarship Award.

99- The osprey colony results were sensational this year 52 chicks were banded in 20+ nests. Additionally of 20 nests that we constructed for PSE&G 12 were used and 5 definitely produced chicks.

99- Contracted with the University of Delaware to commence a survey of maritime resources along the NJ Delaware Bayshore.

99- Completed teachers’ packet entitled Down Jersey Celebrating Our Sense of Place designed to heighten awareness about the natural and cultural heritage of the Delaware Bayshore.

98- Established the Connie Jost Memorial Art Scholarship Art in recognition of the powerful advocacy role art plays in preserving our natural heritage. An appreciation of the aesthetic values of our surroundings has always contributed to their stewardship. Jamie Cook of Bridgeton High School receives 1st scholarship.

98-99 Advocated the continuance of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route before the US Congress.

98- CU representatives attend, monitor and participate in South Jersey Transportation Organization meetings regarding the proposed southern extension of route 55. CU advocates improvements to the existing roadway as opposed to disrupting and destroying river corridors.

98- Hired educational consultant Christine Raabe to coordinate the publication of a teachers’ guide that would compile teachers’ lesson plans that focus is on NJ Delaware Bayshore themes. Established a teachers’ advisory group to review and create these plans.

98- Over 25 volunteers made 6 platforms for the NJ Bureau of Emergency Management. The BER is placing pilings at entrances to tributaries along the NJ coast so that containment booms can be attached in the event of an oil spill. We were asked to construct osprey platforms to affix to these booms. CU volunteers also continued to construct platforms for PSE&G and NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Program.
