Prevent Eagles' Nests From Being Destroyed!

"I am an eagle; I have no voice.  You have allowed me to stand for America's freedom and democracy.  Young men and women fight and die for the values that I represent.  You have allowed me to stand as a symbol of the greater good.  Now I ask you to use your voice, your democratic right to stop further reckless disregard of my rights to a home.  Stop eagles' nests from being destroyed." - Freedom (a resident of Sarvey Wildlife Center).

Dear Citizens,

In 1980 there was one lone eagles' nest left in NJ.  Countless dedicated hours and years of recovery practices have been undertaken by NJ biologists, bringing our eagle numbers to 65 nesting pairs.  This is a success story - a story of how the Endangered Species Act can work as it was intended.  But now we stand at a crossroads of continued success or willful failure.

An eagles' nest in NJ was callously felled in January by a criminal savagely carrying a chain saw.  According to NJ Conservation Officer and US Fish and Wildlife Agent reports there were six witnesses to this act.  It is expected that arrests will be made in the near future.

We can not allow eagle trees to be deliberately cut down by people who simply find it more convenient not to have a nest on their property or adjacent land.  Cutting down eagle nesting trees cannot simply be the cost of doing business. Nor can it be a vandalistic act undertaken to satisfy one's warped sense of humor.

We are very concerned that this case may set a precedent, and possibly even a national precedent.  That is why even before any arrests are made we are asking that US citizens contact NJ Governor Corzine and let him know they are horrified by this act and want the individuals prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Please post this to bird forums and send it to your e-correspondents and to anyone you think might care.

Thank you,
