Wondering
about that spring bloom in the woods? Next time you're hiking
about in your favorite piece of forest or stream, take your digital
camera or photographic memory along. Then open up CU's new
guide and explore our region's flora with Associate Director Renée
Brecht's "Plants of Southern New Jersey."
Search by color, botanical or common name, rarity, type and more. Each
identification provides a photo of the plant, a Britton and Brown line
drawing, a list of fast facts, a distribution map, and some
miscellaneous fun tidbits.
Many of the facts will help you to identify the plants you see through
information beyond a simple photograph. For
instance, the flowering/fruiting time or the habitat in which
the plant will occur can often be an enormous aid to figuring out what
you're seeing.
Renée is continuing to add material. Some plants are listed
with photos and only their botanical and common names; these eventually
will have the full complement of information. Thus far the guide
represents countless hours of time in the field, in class and
studying. So don't be shy about sending your praise and
questions to Renée; she is indeed enthusiastic and dedicated to the
study of plants. We hope you will enjoy the guide and will
make use of it often.
A special thanks to the Partnership Wild and Scenic Program, National
Park Service for enabling us to develop the guide and for offering
members this opportunity to learn more about our region and its
treasures.
